Rear Identification Lamps

Buses, trucks, semitrailers and full trailers that are 80 inches (2,032 mm) or more in overall width and all pole trailers must be equipped with rear identification lamps. The rear of these vehicles must be furnished with three red lamps with one as close as practicable to vertical centerline, one on each side with lamp centers spaced not less than 6 inches (152 mm) or more than 12 inches (305 mm) apart. All three lamps must be on the same level as close as practicable to the top of vehicle. When the rear identification lamps are mounted to the extreme height of a vehicle, rear clearance lamps are not required to be located as close as is practicable to the top of the vehicle.

The term “overall width” refers to the nominal design dimension of the widest part of the vehicle, exclusive of signal lamps, marker lamps, outside rearview mirrors, flexible fender extensions and mud flaps.
